Toronto, Ontario -- More than 480,000 vehicles across Canada and the United States have been recalled by Nissan over an engine failure risk.
Vehicles equipped with Nissan’s variable compression turbo engines are affected, including the 2021–2024 Nissan Rogue, 2019–2020 Nissan Altima, 2019–2022 Infiniti QX50 and 2022 Infiniti QX55.
Of the vehicles recalled, 443,899 vehicles in the U.S. were impacted while 37,837 vehicles in Canada were impacted. The 2021–2024 Nissan Rogue had the greatest number of vehicles recalled at 348,554 while the 2022 Infiniti QX55 had the smallest with 5,124 vehicles recalled.
A potential manufacturing flaw in the engine’s bearing components affecting the main, A-, C- and L-link bearings inside the 1.5-litre three-cylinder and 2.0-litre four-cylinder VC-Turbo engines could cause the bearings to fail.
Bearing failure can lead to engine damage and complete engine failure when driving. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, bearing failures typically develop gradually and drivers will be warned by abnormal engine noises and dashboard warning lights.
Dealers will be notified by Nissan first, starting on July 15 and drivers will be notified starting August 25. Drivers who receive notification letters should get their vehicles inspected at authorized Nissan or Infiniti dealerships.
Repairs and inspections will be free of charge, and the engine oil pan will be inspected for metal debris. Engines containing metal debris will be repaired or replaced. Engines without metal debris will have their oil replaced and engine control module reprogrammed as a precautionary measure. Some models will also have the oil pan gasket replaced.
Vehicle owners can check if their car is included in the recall by using Nissan’s vehicle identification number lookup tool or by entering the recall number (25V437) into the NHTSA’s enterprise portal.
