Every technician knows that skill and experience mean little without the right protection in place. In the case of auto repair and bodyshops, protection is a fullbody affair. From the fumes released by primers, varnishes and aerosols to the voltage risks introduced by modern electric vehicles, danger reaches every part of the job. A new generation of safety standards, equipment and training programs has emerged to meet those risks head-on.

Canadian law still does not require employers to install automated external defibrillators, but hazard assessments are strongly encouraged to determine where they might save lives. For shops working around high-voltage systems, an AED on site is common sense. When a technician’s safety can be decided in seconds, every second matters. Electric vehicles bring power and precision—and serious hazards. A damaged battery can release uncontrolled energy, spark fire or leak toxic fumes. The Automotive Industries Association of Canada’s Innovation in Automotive Training program now includes expanded EV Up-skilling courses, ensuring that technicians are not only qualified to repair electric vehicles but trained to do so safely. Personal protective equipment has evolved alongside the vehicles themselves. Smart helmets now feature augmented reality displays, communication systems and vital sign monitoring. These innovations allow technicians to stay connected and aware while maintaining focus on the work before them.

Clean air remains another invisible battleground. The 2025 Canadian Ambient Air Quality Standards Handbook recommends new annual limits of 12.0 ppb nitrogen dioxide and 4.0 ppb sulphur dioxide. Keeping ventilation systems and filters in top condition protects workers’ lungs as surely as a respirator protects their face. Safe workers are confident workers. The best shops know that safety is not an expense but an investment—one that attracts talent, improves productivity and builds trust. In collision repair, as in the vehicles themselves, strength begins with sound design.
