Charging Ahead: Majority of EV owners report ‘no concerns’ with vehicle repair, says CAA study

CAA’s study was conducted among approximately 16,000 individuals with the goal of better understanding electric vehicle driver behaviour, with data combining insights into plug-in electric vehicles (PHEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

Toronto, Ontario — The majority of electric vehicle (EV) owners across Canada reported having “no concerns” about maintenance and repair for their vehicles, according to a recent online survey by the Canadian Automobile Association (CAA).

The survey involved approximately 16,000 participants and aimed to gain insights into the behaviour of EV drivers, focusing on both plug-in electric vehicles (PHEVs) and battery electric vehicles (BEVs).

When it comes to concerns about battery degradation, Mitsubishi EV drivers are the most apprehensive. Only 28 percent of these drivers reported feeling no concern about battery degradation, while 37 percent expressed mild concern, and 29 percent were either concerned or extremely concerned.

In contrast, Rivian drivers showed the least worry regarding battery issues, with 71 percent indicating they were “not concerned at all.” Meanwhile, 21 percent were “somewhat concerned,” and only three percent reported being “concerned.”

The study also highlighted Canadian charging behaviours. It found that 46 percent of PHEV drivers use Level 1 chargers at home, while 39 percent opt for Level 2 chargers. For BEV drivers, the majority—66 percent—charge using Level 2 chargers at home.

Regarding maintenance and repair costs, the survey revealed that 67 percent of PHEV drivers reported no issues, and 78 percent of BEV drivers felt the same way.
