Chopping List: Équité Association releases annual top 10 most stolen vehicles in Canada list

Toronto, Ontario — Équité Association has released its list of the Top 10 Most Stolen Vehicles across the country, noting that Canada has become a prime hunting ground in the stolen vehicle trade.

Further analysis indicates that high end vehicles of all kinds are being targeted, with fob relay attacks and the reprogramming of fobs through the vehicle’s diagnostic port becoming increasingly more prevalent.

Notably, the Lexus RX series has the highest theft rate at 6.4 percent, while the Honda CR-V has the most thefts at 4,117. Many of these vehicles are stolen by organized crime networks, sent through Montreal, and ultimately exported across the world—a trend that has been increasing in recent years.

“Not only does auto theft cost Canadians millions of dollars each year, the proceeds of this illegal activity also fund organized crime and terrorism, both domestically and internationally,” says Bryan Gast, v-p of investigative services at Équité Association.

Équité Association has also released the number of vehicles insured, the number of thefts by vehicle model generation, and theft rates. For a regional breakdown of the data, click here.
