AutoTrader has launched a ChatGPT integration that allows Canadian consumers to explore its automotive marketplace using conversational prompts, a move the company has positioned as a first among Canadian automotive marketplaces.
The feature enables users to ask ChatGPT to surface vehicles based on criteria such as body type, fuel technology or location. Relevant AutoTrader listings appear directly within the chat interface, with users able to select individual results and continue to full listings on AutoTrader to review vehicle details and connect with sellers.
The rollout reflects shifting consumer expectations around how online searches are conducted, particularly as more shoppers gravitate toward natural language tools rather than traditional keyword searches. “We’ve seen tremendous change in how Canadians shop for cars, and our focus on innovation continues to shape how we respond to these shifts in the car shopping journey,” said Justin Re, chief product officer at AutoTrader, in a statement.
Development of the integration followed ChatGPT’s App Store announcement, with AutoTrader moving quickly to bring its marketplace onto the platform. The company noted the feature may also benefit dealers by increasing exposure for vehicles already listed on AutoTrader, as inventory becomes discoverable through new AI-powered search pathways.
Users can access the integration by connecting the AutoTrader app through ChatGPT’s Apps section. The feature is available in both English and French.
AutoTrader built the tool in partnership with OpenAI as part of its broader AI-first strategy. The company has previously applied artificial intelligence to improve search relevance and vehicle discovery, with the ChatGPT integration extending those efforts into conversational search environments.
