The collision repair industry has a knowledge problem. Not because it lacks expertise, but because every night much of that expertise walks out the door.
Every day, bodyshops solve problems that make the next repair safer, faster and more profitable. They uncover OEM procedures, justify overlooked operations, defend proper repairs and negotiate fair compensation. Those lessons have value far beyond the shop where they were learned. Yet tomorrow another repairer will face many of those same challenges without the benefit of what someone else discovered yesterday. We continue to solve the same problems over and over again because there is no practical way to capture what we’ve learned and make it available to the next shop.
No other major industry can afford to operate that way, yet collision repair has done exactly that for decades. Artificial intelligence didn’t create this problem. It simply exposed it. The real question is whether we’ll finally begin treating our collective knowledge as one of the industry’s most valuable assets.
