Security Summit: Government of Canada announces National Summit on combating auto theft

Ottawa, Ontario — On January 21, the Government of Canada announced that a National Summit on combating auto theft will take place on February 8 in Ottawa.

According to initial details, the goal of the summit is to bring together leaders from key jurisdictions across the automotive and transportation industry, as well as government sectors, to help ensure a coordinated response.

Notably, in 2022 alone, rates of vehicle theft in Canada saw a significant jump with Quebec seeing a 50 percent increase in theft rates from 2021 and Ontario seeing a 48.3 percent increase—the top two rates across the country.

Attending government figures include: the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Public Safety, Democratic Institutions and Intergovernmental Affairs; the Honourable Arif Virani, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada; the Honourable Pablo Rodriguez, Minister of Transport and Quebec Lieutenant; the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry; and the Honourable Anita Anand, President of the Treasury Board.

More details concerning the event are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
