Toronto, Ontario — Hyundai, Kia and Genesis are recalling 26,188 electric vehicles (EVs) in Canada due to a defect which could lead to a potential power loss.
The recall was issued due to the risk of a potentially damaged Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) in some models which could stop charging the vehicle’s 12V battery. The recall was originally issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and also affects 147,110 models in the United States.
Affected vehicle models include the 2022 to 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5; the 2023 to 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 6; the 2023 to 2024 Genesis GV60; the 2023 to 2024 Electrified GV70; the 2023 to 2024 Electrified G80; and the 2022 to 2024 Kia EV6.
According to Hyundai, “the ICCU may be subject to certain electrical load conditions that can damage internal components and open the ICCU fuse. If the vehicle is driven in ‘fail-safe’ mode for an extended period—a malfunction indicator light and warning message may be present—the vehicle could eventually lose all motive power. If this happens, it could lead to a loss of propulsion and increase the risk of an accident.”
As a result, all brands will notify owners of affected models by mail. Owners will be advised to take their vehicle to a dealership to be inspected, and if needed, the dealer will replace the ICCU and its fuse free of charge. The dealer will also perform a software update for the ICCU.
