  • Soaps It Up has been CARSTAR Canada's national charity car wash for more than a decade, with CF Canada as the company's charity of choice
  • Co-owners Romena and Bisram Deokinandan emphasized the event's importance in honoring Mahon's 10-year legacy of dedication and passion for giving back

On July 11, the CARSTAR Newmarket team came together for its annual “Soaps It Up” car wash to fundraise for Cystic Fibrosis Canada.

Filled with colour, fun and team bonding, staff members washed approximately 75 cars and donated $2,500 to CF Canada, CARSTAR’s charity of choice.

The event was also deeply personal to the team, serving to honour and commemorate the memory of their late staff member, Chris Mahon, a 36-year-old body technician who recently passed away from esophageal cancer. Following the loss of Mahon, CARSTAR Newmarket launched a GoFundMe campaign to provide educational funds for Mahon’s eight-year-old daughter, Lily.

To date, the GoFundMe has raised almost $7,000, surpassing the initial $5,000 goal.

Soaps It Up has been CARSTAR Canada’s national car wash for more than a decade. In a social media post, CARSTAR thanked the Newmarket location’s co-owners, Romena and Bisram Deokinandan, for their continued contributions to the CF community and the community of Newmarket.

Romena is also CARSTAR Newmarket’s director of finance, while Bisram is also the production manager.

“This was one of the most important carwashes we have ever done. Since joining CARSTAR 10 years ago, the Cystic Fibrosis cause has become very close to our hearts and our families’ hearts. It gives us a stage and a platform to make a meaningful difference and help change lives — not just in our local community but hopefully on a larger scale. We feel incredibly blessed to have the opportunity to serve people beyond repairing their vehicles and putting them safely back on the road,” said Romena.

“What made this particular carwash especially significant, though, was our technician, Chris Mahon, who recently passed from stage four cancer. Chris was with us for 10 years. Being a family-owned business, he became a part of our family and was always one of the biggest cheerleaders for this event," said Bisram. "He brought his daughter every year and truly cared about giving back. This year’s carwash was held specifically to honour Chris, recognizing his incredible presence, dedication and shared passion for helping us be a force for good.”
