On May 14, Honda Canada Inc. announced is suspending plans to build an electric vehicle (EV) plant in Alliston, Ontario, an initiative the company referred to in its statement as a “Canadian value chain investment project,” citing a change in external resource strategy, evolving business conditions and shifting customer demand.
Employment or production levels at Honda’s current manufacturing facility in Alliston are unaffected by this decision, as the facility continues to produce Honda Civic and CR-V models to meet strong demand. Honda states that its “flexible manufacturing approach” remains an “industry hallmark” that supports “40 years of continuous Canadian production.”
Offering insight into the key context and considerations behind the decision, Honda notes that it will continue to review future business and procurement strategies and monitor market conditions.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford pledged $2.5 billion toward the project on behalf of when it was first announced in April 2024, as did then Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. “Today’s historic $15 billion investment by Honda delivers on our government’s promise to bring back manufacturing as part of our plan to rebuild Ontario’s economy with thousands of good-paying union jobs and economic benefits for workers and families across the province,” said Ford in the April 2024 news release.
While the new EV plant could have created 1,000 manufacturing jobs, Honda stated that future funding commitments from both the provincial and federal governments have not resulted in transferred funds.
Yet Honda remains confident in its ability to effectively navigate current market conditions while continuing to support strong market demand for its products.
According to the statement, in 2025, “Honda built approximately 400,000 vehicles in Canada,” producing approximately 198,000 Civic units and 202,000 CR-V units. All of the units sold in Canada were made in Canada—Honda’s unique “building vehicles where we sell” approach—and in 2025, more than 60% were hybrids. Honda has maintained manufacturing operations in Canada since 1986.
