BREAKING: MPI halts hail estimates after storm

Snowball Sized Hail

Manitoba Public Insurance has introduced temporary measures for hail-related claims following the June 9 storm system that brought hail, heavy rain and tornado activity to parts of southern Manitoba.

A June 10 notice to accredited autobody and glass repair shops states, “In response to the high volume of claims resulting from the storm on June 9, 2026, MPI is implementing temporary contingency measures for hail claims.”

The notice states, “Estimate appointments will no longer be scheduled for incoming hail claims. MPI is working on dedicated locations for estimating.”

According to the notice, customers will be contacted later to schedule appointments, with non-driveable vehicles prioritized.

The notice also states, “MPI does not accept initial hail estimates from repair shops.”

Accredited repair facilities and authorized paintless dent repair facilities will be able to access completed estimates through Mitchell Connect.

Chris Jachnycky of Winnipeg-based Gateway Autobody said demand was immediate.

“I was at the shop by 6:00 a.m. to get ahead of the day—and there were already six customers waiting in their vehicles. By 8:00 a.m., our phones were flooded with over 100 recorded call-ins,” Jachnycky said.

“Without clear direction from MPI, we focused on what we could: cleaning up glass and crash-wrapping vehicles to make them safe.”

The Automotive Trades Association of Manitoba told members that physical damage and glass claims had already been trending above last year's levels before the storm. Following the June 9 event, the association warned that repair facilities should expect additional demand from damaged windshields, back glass and side glass.

“With the massive storm that swept through Manitoba last night, we know shops will be extremely busy in the days ahead,” the association said in a member update provided to Collision Repair. “We know there are broken windows, back glass, windshields, etc. throughout the province.”

MPI's notice also outlines temporary procedures for vehicles with hail-related glass damage where the vehicle is not safe to drive.
