Live@SEMA: Valspar shows off new Metallic Bright Red toner technology

The 1966 Ford Fairlane showcasing the new DeBeer Metallic Bright toner in Ford Ruby Red Metallic is currently on display at Valspar's booth at the 2016 SEMA Show.

Las Vegas, Nevada — November 1, 2016 — Refinishing candy coatings is notoriously tricky, but a new product from Valspar Automotive promises to make the process simpler. The company’s DeBeer Refinish line has introduced what it calls a “game-changer” to the market at the 2016 SEMA Show.

The company’s new patent-pending Metallic Bright Red toner technology is currently on display in the Valspar Automotive booth–#10851 in the North Hall–on a 1966 Ford Fairlane customized by Anton’s Hot Rod Shop. The Fairlane features DeBeer’s new Metallic Bright Red OEM-approved toner in Ford RR (Ruby Red) Metallic.

“This is a real breakthrough in colour design and refinish technology,” says Paul Goedhart, Global Director of Color Technology, Valspar Automotive. “With colour and our customers are at the core of our business and all of our brands, we’re continually working to deliver innovative, solution-minded products that make repair and refinishing processes easier, and shops more productive. OEM-approved DeBeer Refinish 900+ Basecoat, featuring our Metallic Bright Red toner, accomplishes these goals.”

DeBeer’s Metallic Bright Red toner is the first step in a three-part process for refinishing tricky OEM red candy colors. A statement from the company says the difference and impact are clearly visible from the first coat—the OEM basecoat formula featuring Metallic Bright Red.

“By design, colour match is almost spot-on from the first coat of basecoat colour,” says Goedhart. “We’ve eliminated a step by combining the first two layers in the candy repair.”

Traditionally, the first two layers would be a grey undercoat followed by a red basecoat. The second step is the translucent layer, a lightly-tinted intermediate coat that gives candy coatings their depth and vibrancy, followed by a layer of clearcoat for shine and lasting protection.

“More and more, OEMs are looking for the trendy colours that are increasing in demand, like Ford’s Ruby Red Metallic and Chrysler’s Inferno Red Metallic,” says Laura Yerkey, Director of Marketing, Valspar Automotive. “And, ironically these are the colors that are the hardest to repair from a colour match, blending and hiding standpoint.”

The new candy coating is in full display on the 1966 Ford Fairline build by Anton’s Hot Rod Shops. The business is owned and operated by  Anton Lanesky.

“Each layer is easy to mix and spray, and goes on evenly and has great coverage,” says Lanesky. “With candies, sometimes you can get haloing or striping at the midcoat process, but not with this. It’s translucent and lays down beautifully.”

In addition to the candy red hue by DeBeer Refinish, the ’66 Fairlane features an all-aluminum 510 cubic inch Ford motor, one-off Billet wheels made by Boze, 4-wheel disc brakes and a custom suspension. “The car is pretty much factory with the exception of the engine, wheels and suspension, which is anything but,” says Lanesky.

According to Valspar Automotive, there are two big advantages for the DeBeer red toner technology: spot-on colour match for a difficult hue and a user-friendly simplified process.

“It’s a huge time and money-saver for refinishers,” says Yerkey. “There’s also zero cloudiness or mottling which is an industry first for candy red, a refinisher’s dream.”

The Metallic Bright Red toner is available for both solvent and waterborne mixing colors including: 9184 Metallic Bright Red for DeBeer WaterBase 900+ Series and 5184 Metallic Bright Red for BeroBase 500 Series (solvent).

Anton Lanesky discusses the build and the new coatings in the video below.
