Diagnostics Day: Students get hands-on training through industry workshop

Students from Aldershot School got a hands-on introduction to vehicle diagnostics during a recent workshop hosted by Fix Network, bringing together industry leaders and educators to support the next generation of technicians.

The “Introduction to Diagnostics” session was developed in collaboration with Automotive Industries Association of Canada and Y2 Entrepreneurship Labs, focusing on real-world problem solving such as troubleshooting customer-reported noise symptoms and warning light indicators.

Students were guided through the thought process of an experienced technician before applying those skills themselves, with an emphasis on accelerating their learning and building practical experience.

Participants were part of the Specialist High Skills Major program, which allows senior high school students to focus on a specific career path while earning industry certifications and hands-on experience.

During the workshop, students worked through electrical issues and learned how to identify and isolate problems, building critical thinking and troubleshooting skills through practical exercises.

“It was great to be part of something that’s actively equipping the next generation of technicians with real-world skills, especially when it comes to diagnosing vehicles and isolating wiring circuits, which can be one of the more challenging areas in our industry,” said Dilraj Sekhon, general manager of R&S Auto in a statement on LinkedIn.

Sekhon added that he was “genuinely impressed” by how quickly students grasped key concepts and applied their thinking, noting a high level of engagement and curiosity throughout the session.

Fix Network highlighted the importance of early exposure to diagnostics as the industry faces an ongoing shortage of skilled technicians, noting that hands-on experience can help students better understand career pathways and make informed decisions about their future.

The organization is also exploring future collaborations with AIA Canada, including additional student-focused sessions and introductory experiences in both mechanical and collision repair.
