  • Ontario offers $5,000 total in scholarships through Support Ontario Youth for registered apprentices in all skilled trades
  • Applications close November 13 and are open to Level 2 and higher apprentices with active Registered Training Agreements
  • Awards are paid directly to colleges to cover eligible classroom training fees
  • Applicants must provide detailed information including trade details, financial challenges, career goals, and expected qualification exam dates
  • Successful applicants will be announced in December and must respond within the specified deadline to remain eligible

Ontario skilled trades apprentices can apply for one of 10 scholarships worth $500 each to help cover classroom training fees, with applications due Nov. 13.

Support Ontario Youth (SOY), an Etobicoke-based registered charity providing apprenticeship support, mentorship and guidance, issued the reminder on Oct. 23.

A total of $5,000 is available to individuals through the SOY Education Scholarship program. Applications are open to registered Ontario apprentices at Level 2 or higher across all skilled trades, including automotive trades. Applicants must have an active Registered Training Agreement and a student identification number with their training delivery agent, such as a college.

The awards will be paid directly to successful applicants’ colleges to cover eligible classroom training fees. Applicants who do not know their student identification number are instructed to obtain it from their registrar’s office before starting the submission.

The application requires more than contact information. Apprentices must explain how the scholarship would help them complete their training, including the financial costs or other challenges they face.

Applicants must also provide their trade name and code, Ministry Client ID from their Registered Training Agreement, program length and progress through their classroom training levels. Other questions cover their expected certificate of qualification examination date, current employer and work duties.

Written responses address why applicants chose their trade, their career goals and any skilled trades experience outside their apprenticeship. The form warns that unanswered questions will result in disqualification.

Applications opened Sept. 14. Successful applicants will be announced in December and must respond within the deadline specified in their notification email to remain eligible.

Automotive apprentices have received support through previous scholarship rounds. The program website lists automotive recipients alongside apprentices in electrical, plumbing, sheet metal and industrial mechanic millwright trades.

In the Oct. 23 announcement, Madelyn M., an automotive service technician apprentice and scholarship recipient, described how the award helped relieve financial pressure during training.

“I am truly grateful for the opportunity to be selected for this scholarship. This opportunity can take some of the financial stress off while I work hard to learn as much as possible and implement it into my working life once I'm done.”

Apprentices can review the requirements and access the application through the SOY Education Scholarship webpage.
