An Algonquin College student has earned gold in the automotive painting competition at the Skills Ontario Competition.
Alisha H. of Algonquin College placed first in the post-secondary division, while Peyton MP of the Simcoe County District School Board earned top spot in the secondary category.
Competition specifications provided for the post-secondary division show students were evaluated on automotive refinishing procedures including colour matching, paint mixing, surface preparation and polishing.
Competitors completed exercises involving defect removal, spray-out card production, substrate preparation and application of waterborne basecoat and clear coat systems using professional spray equipment.
Students were also assessed on blending techniques, spray gun setup and safe handling of refinishing materials and equipment.
The automotive painting competition is part of Skills Ontario’s annual event, which introduces students to careers in the skilled trades and serves as a pathway to national and international competition.
Top finishers are expected to advance to the Skills Canada National Competition, where they will compete against peers from across the country.
