Toronto, Ontario — August 11, 2017 — Marc Tremblay, Coordinator at Tropicana, recently announced a new training program, “Tropicana Futures: Auto Body Collision and Damage Repairer.” The program, which starts screening in August with classes beginning in September, will run for 32-weeks, three days a week.
The program is quite unique in that it is geared exclusively towards candidates who do not have a high school diploma or equivalent, giving them an opportunity to attain a GED followed by a career in the trades.
“There is untapped talent that wants to get into the industry, but can’t because they don’t have their High School Diploma or equivalent to get a 310B apprenticeship,” commented Tremblay. “Not everyone can get a high school diploma for different reasons, and this program will give them the chance they deserve and opens up doors to careers in collision repair.”
Students enrolled in the program will take courses built to help them write their GED exam, and will, after completing the program, take the GED exam. Those who pass will have the opportunity to attend a career fair to find a placement or apprenticeship. These students are guaranteed to receive either a placement or apprenticeship.
Tropicana’s new program offers a number of features, including product demonstrations, shop tours, guest speakers and safety equipment. In regards to providing students the opportunity to have first-hand encounters with the industry, through shop tours and guest speakers, Tremblay said, “The more exposure students get to the industry, the more motivated they will be. Bringing them to shops reminds them of the apple at the end that they’re working towards.”
Tremblay added, “This program would not have happened without Essential Skills from the Toronto District School Board and the Autobody Industry.”
