Toronto, Ontario -- AkzoNobel Vehicle Refinishes and the McLaren Formula 1 Team are launching a campaign introducing Sikkens Autowave Optima.

The new waterborne basecoat is positioned to increase efficiency in collision repair operations and support sustainability targets. The product launch builds on the partnership between AkzoNobel Vehicle Refinishes and McLaren that began in 2008.

The campaign was filmed inside the McLaren Technology Centre and features McLaren Formula 1 driver Lando Norris. In a social media video for the campaign, Norris takes on the Sikkens Spray Challenge and applies McLaren Papaya orange inside the booth while demonstrating the one-stop application process and the ability to create a fade without leaving the booth between coats.

AkzoNobel reports Autowave Optima’s high pigmentation enables coverage in 1.5 layers instead of two. The company states this can reduce booth process times for bodyshops by up to 50 percent.

The basecoat removes the need for flash off between layers. AkzoNobel notes the technology enables shops to use up to 60 percent less energy compared to a conventional basecoat while meeting 380 g/l VOC.

“Our partnership with the McLaren Formula 1 Team is built on a shared commitment to precision, speed and innovation -- values that also define Autowave Optima,” stated Patrick Bourguignon, business director of automotive and specialty coatings at AkzoNobel.

AkzoNobel positions Autowave Optima as a technology that will help bodyshops complete repairs faster while maintaining colour accuracy and consistent finish standards as expectations around speed and sustainability continue to increase.
