Axalta Coating Systems has announced Solar Boost as its 2026 Global Automotive Color of the Year, highlighting continued industry movement toward more expressive vehicle finishes.

The company links the selection to evolving consumer preferences and the increasing role colour plays in vehicle purchasing decisions.

“A vehicle’s color heavily shapes its initial perception, affecting how buyers feel about its safety, sportiness, elegance and even resale value, making color a significant influence in the buying decision,” said Hadi Awada, president of Global Mobility Coatings at Axalta. “In fact, Axalta’s own research has shown more than 80 percent of buyers consider it a key factor, which is why it’s so critical for OEMs to understand dynamic global consumer sentiments and align their vehicle color portfolio accordingly.”

Global colour research informed the choice, with orange emerging as a shade associated with optimism, vibrancy and individuality across multiple regions. The company notes growing consumer interest in colours outside traditional neutral palettes, particularly among younger buyers and within expanding electric vehicle segments.

“Solar Boost is the result of our team’s deep experience in both the art and science of color,” said Robert Roop, senior vice-president and chief technology officer at Axalta.

The 2026 designation marks the 12th year Axalta has identified a Global Automotive Color of the Year. The program forms part of the company’s broader colour forecasting efforts, which analyze automotive, consumer and design trends to support vehicle manufacturers.

Axalta reports its colour experts regularly evaluate regional and global developments influencing automotive finishes and styling.
