The Automobile Journalists Association of Canada unveiled the winners of its 2026 Innovation Awards during the opening ceremony of the Vancouver International Auto Show.
"We are always proud to reward the year's best new technologies with our Innovation Awards," said Awards Chair, Graham Heeps. "Sometimes innovation is all about a revolutionary shift in thinking; at other times it is incremental improvement by a diligent team of engineers that delivers the greatest benefit to consumers. There are examples of both approaches among our winners this year."
Taking the best green innovation award is the plug-in hybrid powertrain in the 2026 Toyota RAV4 PHEV. The sixth-generation system delivers increased power and efficiency while extending electric range to approximately 80 kilometres. Enhancements include a larger, higher-voltage battery, DC fast charging capability and other refinements recognized by AJAC’s judging panel.
Volvo earned the best safety innovation award for its Multi-Adaptive Safety Belt. Designed to improve occupant protection, the system adjusts restraining force and duration in real time based on occupant size and shape, as well as the nature of an impending collision.
In the technical category, the all-electric Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology received top honours for its quad-motor system. The setup enhances off-road capability beyond its gas-powered counterpart, including the ability to climb gradients of up to 45 degrees on suitable terrain.
The AJAC Innovation Awards are presented annually across three categories: green, safety and technical innovation. Winners are selected by a panel of AJAC journalists, who evaluate entries based on consumer benefit, originality, cost and potential market impact.
