Toronto, Ontario — The automotive recycling industry is entering a new chapter with the rapid growth of electric vehicles. For recyclers, this shift presents both challenges and opportunities—requiring new skills, safety protocols, and confidence when working with high-voltage systems.
As part of Automotive Recyclers of Canada and the Ontario Automotive Recyclers Association’s ongoing commitment to keeping our members ahead of the curve, we recently hosted a specialized EV Training session, one designed not just to talk about EV safety but to give recyclers hands-on experience with actual vehicles and batteries.
A Hands-On Approach to Safety and Confidence
Participants left the session with a clear message: training is most effective when it goes beyond the classroom. One recycler summed it up perfectly:
“The hands-on part of the training was great. This was beyond theoretical training and telling me what to do and not do, I was hands on with vehicles and batteries.”
This practical approach is essential. Knowing the theory is important, but being able to physically handle components and see procedures performed in real time builds lasting confidence. Another participant shared:
“I feel much more confident about working on electric vehicles now.”
That confidence is exactly what the industry needs. As more EVs enter the dismantling stream, recyclers who are prepared will not only protect their workers and facilities but also capture the business opportunities that EV parts, batteries, and materials will bring.
Expertise that Makes the Difference
Our session was led by Greg Aguilera, whose ability to break down complex technical details into clear, practical lessons drew praise from attendees.
“Greg was awesome about explaining the ins and outs of safety around EVs.”
From identifying safe handling zones to demonstrating proper isolation techniques, Greg reinforced the message that EV dismantling is manageable—when you have the right knowledge and systems in place.
Carrying the Torch Forward
This training builds on the foundation established by programs like CAREC, which has long been used to demonstrate to insurers, regulators, and the public that recyclers are among the “good guys” in the industry. With EV training now added to the mix, ARC and OARA members continue to show leadership by meeting emerging challenges head-on.
The feedback was clear: recyclers want—and need—this type of training. The sessions were described as “fantastic,” “hands-on,” and “well worth the time.” By investing in this kind of practical, industry-specific training, we are not only keeping our people safe but also ensuring that our members remain competitive and credible partners in the evolving automotive landscape.
Looking Ahead
EVs are here to stay, and their share of the market will only increase in the years ahead. Training sessions like this ensure that recyclers aren’t left playing catch-up. Instead, we are positioned as leaders—equipped, confident, and ready for the future.
As we continue to roll out new sessions and expand our EV readiness programs, we encourage members to stay engaged. With strong industry participation, we can make sure that our collective expertise grows, and that recyclers remain at the forefront of this transition.
