In recent years, thieves have been targeting vehicles such as the Toyota RAV-4, C-HR and Lexus RC, ES and NX by disconnecting part of the headlight and attaching a device to the CAN-BUS system. This allows them to unlock the doors and start the engine.
Vehicles recovered after these incidents often face full wiring loom replacements, with costs reaching about $18,500. As a result, insurers opt to declare the vehicle a total loss.
Repairify staff say its diagnostic-led approach enables workshops to carry out targeted CAN-BUS repairs, reducing repair times and preventing unnecessary write-offs.
“This is not just an issue around theft, it is also technical and financial,” said Robert Neale, workshop operations manager at Repairify UK in a release. He added that as vehicle systems become increasingly digital, practical repair solutions will be essential to keeping cars on the road with restored security systems.
