Toronto, Ontario — The Hertz car rental company is being forced to pay customers approximately $168 million by the end of the year, after falsely accusing an undisclosed number of customers of stealing rented vehicles.

According to a press release from the company, this settlement will resolve more than 95 percent of pending theft report claims.

“While we will not always be perfect, the professionals at Hertz will continue to work every day to provide best-in-class service to the tens of millions of people we serve each year,” said Stephen Scherr, CEO of Hertz.

According to the company’s list of Canadian outlets, its clientele includes airport vehicle rental services and automotive repair businesses. It was not stated how many Canadian collision repair shops were affected.

Hertz previously filed for bankruptcy in 2020, but recovered in 2021 amid “strong financial results.”
