Canada Must Go: UAW releases new demands to GM

Toronto, Ontario — Oct. 11, 2019 — The strike against GM enters its 25th day as the UAW is now demanding that the company ceases the import of all cars from non-US plants–including Canada.

“We have made it clear that there is no job security for us when GM products are made in other countries for the purpose of selling them here in the US,” wrote Terry Dittes, the lead negotiator for UAW.

This comes after Ontario’s Ingersoll plant was reopened earlier this month, allowing the St. Catherines plant to run as well, albeit it at a reduced capacity. The new demands seem targeted partially towards these moves by GM.

Despite ongoing talks, Dittes wrote that negotiations had “taken a turn for the worse” on Sunday. Wednesday’s bargaining reportedly lasted until 3 am Thursday morning before a brief respite.

As well as the lean towards less foreign involvement, UAW is also calling for GM to stop putting an emphasis on the production of EVs and AVs, which could also be targeted towards Canada due to GM’s announced $17-million investment into its Oshawa plant.
