Confindence Booster: ARA and URG launch audited recycling certification

A new automotive recycling certification has been introduced with requirements for annual audits, parts grading, recall checks and records linking parts to their source vehicles.

CARE, short for Certified Automotive Recycler of Excellence, launched on 2026-10-12. The Automotive Recyclers Association (ARA) and United Recyclers Group (URG) jointly administer the designation.

ARA is a U.S.-based association representing professional automotive recyclers. URG is a member-owned recycling network with locations in Canada and the United States.

CARE’s requirements cover how suppliers describe and grade components, document warranties and handle complaints. Certified facilities must include the source vehicle’s identification number and stock number on each parts invoice. They must also check designated safety components for recalls at the point of sale and maintain procedures to stop the sale of recalled parts.

“Recyclers have invested for years in improving their businesses, their processes and the quality of the products they sell,” said Kristi Werner, URG’s chief executive officer, in the launch announcement.

Facilities seeking CARE certification must first hold ARA’s Certified Automotive Recycler designation. They must then appoint a quality manager, document their procedures, track performance measures and pass a certification audit.

A URG-assigned auditor conducts the assessment, which includes virtual and on-site checks. Facilities must pass annual audits to retain the designation. ARA and URG can withdraw it.

The launch follows a partnership announced in 2025 to develop a shared quality-assurance program using elements of the organizations’ existing certification systems.

Qualifying member facilities have up to 12 months to complete onboarding and certification. The first year is included with either ARA or URG membership. However, CARE’s enrollment page specifies that URG membership will be required to remain in the program after the launch period.

Enrollment details are available here.
