Private Parts: GM restricts sales of EV parts to approved bodyshops

General Motors has restricted the sale of critical electric vehicle structural parts to certified repair shops within its Collision Repair Network, effective August 7, blocking uncertified bodyshops from purchasing 12 specific front frame rail components for models like the Cadillac Lyriq and Chevrolet Blazer EV. The policy aims to ensure repair facilities have proper training, tools, and safety protocols to handle EV-specific architecture and high-voltage systems, though it has sparked controversy among independent repair shops and recyclers who argue the restrictions are overly restrictive.

General Motors has officially restricted the sale of critical electric vehicle structural parts to certified repair shops under a strict new policy aimed at ensuring specialized safety and training standards.

The mandate, which took effect Aug. 7, completely blocks uncertified bodyshops from purchasing 12 specific front frame rail service section part numbers. 

The components are now exclusively available to facilities within the GM Collision Repair Network that have achieved a designated battery electric vehicle compliance tier.

The structural restriction impacts several high-profile electric models across the automaker's lineup, including the Cadillac Lyriq, Vistiq, and Optiq. It also covers the Chevrolet Blazer EV, Equinox EV, Silverado EV, and the Canadian-built BrightDrop EV.

Company documentation indicates the structural limits are necessary to guarantee that repair facilities have the precise training, tools, and safety protocols required to handle the unique architecture of electric vehicles. The manufacturer warned that front frame rails are primary structural components designed to absorb crash energy, protect occupants, and maintain vehicle alignment. 

Because these rails are tightly integrated with high-voltage systems and advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) sensors, the automaker warned that improper repairs pose severe safety risks, including electrical hazards for technicians and first responders.

Independent Canadian repair shops that lack the specialized electric vehicle certification are now barred from ordering the restricted parts until they meet the manufacturer's network requirements. 

The automaker noted that any repair facility remains eligible to apply for enrollment to lift the ordering restriction.The policy has amplified existing friction between the automaker and independent Canadian repair and recycling sectors over a broader shift toward restrictive original equipment manufacturer procedures. 

In July, GM enacted a separate policy that strictly prohibits the use of salvaged, recycled, or aftermarket ADAS components in collision repairs, sparking pushback from industry advocates who argue the restrictions are internally inconsistent.

Vince Edivan, the executive director of the Automotive Recyclers Association (ARA), challenged the standard the automaker applies after a collision.

“If ADAS components can remain in service after a collision when they pass OEM inspection, diagnostic, and calibration procedures, then an undamaged OEM component from another vehicle should be evaluated under those same standards,” Edivan said.

The dispute comes as insurers and repairers rely more heavily on alternative components to manage repair costs. Recent data from Mitchell indicated that the use of aftermarket, recycled, and remanufactured parts in Canadian collision repairs increased by nearly 2% through 2025. 

Figures from Car-Part.com showed that while recycled components made up a small fraction of Canadian repair estimates, they provided savings of nearly 48.5% compared to new factory pricing.

Edivan argued that the origin of the components should not dictate whether they can be safely utilized by repair technicians, noting that the average vehicle age is approaching 13 years and making recycled factory components crucial for keeping older cars on the road.

“If prior collision exposure alone makes an ADAS component unsafe, then all ADAS components should be replaced after every collision repair, regardless of condition or calibration results,” Edivan said. “We support repair decisions based on safety, testing, and objective evidence, not blanket assumptions about the source of a part.”
