
Scarborough, Ontario -- Toronto police and fire officials are investigating a suspected arson after eight vehicles were set ablaze outside a Scarborough auto repair facility early Sunday morning.
Emergency crews responded to a call around 2:20 a.m. on July 14, reporting multiple vehicles on fire in the parking lot of Next Gear Auto east near Sheppard Avenue East and McCowan Road.
Toronto Fire Services said the flames were under control within about 30 minutes and that no injuries were reported.
Toronto police services have confirmed they are treating the incident as arson. In a statement to media, investigators said they believe the fire was intentionally set and are currently reviewing security footage.
Photos and videos posted to social media show thick black smoke and flames engulfing several vehicles in the lot.
“I’ve been here for 10 years, we’ve never had an issue like this,” said shop owner Mehran Malekzadeh in an interview with CBC News. “It was pretty devastating.”
Damage to the vehicles and property is still being assessed. Investigators have not released any information on potential suspects.
Police are asking anyone with information, including dashcam or surveillance footage from the area between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m., to contact 43 Division or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
As of publication, the investigation remains ongoing. The shop currently remains open.
