Regina, Saskatchewan — Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) has released its 2022 Saskatchewan Traffic Collision Report, noting 29,983 accounted for vehicle accidents occurring in the province.
According to SGI’s report, 2022 saw a 23 percent collision increase from 2021. However, Tyler McMurchy, manager of media relations at SGI noted that 2021 was not a typical year due to Covid restrictions. The report specifically looks at collisions in the Traffic Accident Information System (TAIS), which includes instances on public roads where individuals were injured, or where estimated costs for repairs to property or vehicles were over $5,000.
By comparison, in 2019, the total number of collisions was 28,886, or 3.53 per 100 licensed operators. 2022 saw a rate of 3.56 collisions per 100 licensed operators or a slight increase from pre-pandemic years. SGI did not compare the number of collisions in 2021 and 2020 to the current data, given the were atypical years for collisions due to Covid-19 restrictions.
The report also notes that most collisions happen at intersections with 2022’s stats showing that 61 percent of collisions with injuries and 26 percent of collisions with fatalities took place at an intersection.
