Communication Crisis: Network outage hits Nissan and retail network

Toronto, Ontario — As of Thursday, Nissan is experiencing a widespread network outage in the U.S. and Canada.

Prior to this date, the automaker’s systems have been down for the past three days.

The outage “pretty much affects all things Nissan,” according to a source briefed on the matter. “You name it, it is affected.”

Nissan spokesperson Brian Brockman declined to comment on the reason for the interruption or say whether it was related to a cyber attack.

“Due to a network outage, some operations in the Americas have been interrupted,” Brockman said. “We are working as quickly as possible to address the issue.”

In a memo to retailers, Nissan said the outage affects the company’s internal email, applications and aftermarket technical call centres. The outage also affects a key communication system that helps dealerships order cars and parts, obtain rebate information, check on recalls and file warranty claims.

Furthermore, operations for Nissan’s captive finance company, Nissan Motor Acceptance Corp. are also affected, including credit application processing, funding of loan and lease contracts and dealer financing.

In the memo to retailers, Nissan said it can manually process parts orders for critical situations and parts shortages.
As of the time of writing, no further word has come publicly from the automaker on whether progress on these issues has been made or when all outage issues can be expected to be resolved.
