MODERN ASSAY, REIMAGINED FOR TODAY’S RECYCLER
Smaller lots, faster settlements, and total transparency

For many recyclers, the word “assay” still carries outdated assumptions — large volumes, long wait times, blind shipments, and unnecessary risk. But the reality has changed. Today’s modern-day assay is smarter, faster, and built to work for yards of all sizes.
Assay is no longer reserved for large players with truckload volumes and months to wait. With advances in processing technology and machinery, assay has become one of the most accessible and data-driven settlement methods available to recyclers.
How Assay Used to Work
Ten to twenty years ago, assay requirements created real barriers. Yards often needed 1,000 or more converters to qualify, putting many recyclers at a disadvantage. Payments could take months, and material was shipped blindly with limited visibility or verification. As a result, many yards chose to sell by the piece to intermediaries who absorbed the risk — and the upside.
The Modern-Day Assay
Fast forward to today, and the process looks entirely different. Modern assay now supports lots as small as 150 units — often a single gaylord box. Settlements are completed in 10–15 business days, with advance payments available up to 80%. Most importantly, recyclers are paid on measured ounces, not converter averages.
This evolution removes uncertainty and lowers the barrier to entry. Assay is now efficient, transparent, and designed to fit the realities of modern recycling operations.
Why the Method Matters
Per-unit pricing may feel simple, but it hides trade-offs. Catalog prices must account for handling, freight, storage, market risk, and margin—often reducing true payouts. Even identical part numbers can vary widely in precious metal content based on use and condition. Assay measures what’s actually there, delivering more accurate and sustainable returns over time.
At PMR, measured-ounce settlements are paired with clear, auditable reporting — so recyclers can see their exact platinum, palladium, and rhodium ounces — and the value they represent — lot by lot.
Technology That Puts Yards in Control
As PMR turns 30 in 2026, our focus remains the same: innovation, transparency, and partnership. We’ve invested heavily in modern assay capabilities and digital tools that give recyclers full visibility into their material.
These tools allow yards to build and track inventory daily, understand what’s in every box before it ships, and settle with confidence — eliminating blind risk from the process entirely.

In a market defined by consolidation and shrinking volumes, every margin point matters. The recyclers who succeed will be those who adopt methods that pay on measured value, not averages.
Assay isn’t intimidating anymore. It’s a smarter, faster, and more profitable tool — built for today’s yard and tomorrow’s growth. By choosing modern assay, recyclers keep more value in their yard and operate from a position of strength.
