Toronto, Ontario — United States President Donald Trump has officially declared that a 25 percent tariff will be imposed on automobiles effective April 2, 2025.
This decision comes after an official statement made last Thursday by Trump calling for what the President refers to as “fair and reciprocal” trade tariffs on all major U.S. trading partners.
Despite these claims, in previous statements, Trump has further commented that when it comes to vehicles in Canada specifically, tariffs could be as high as 50 or 100 percent because “we don’t want their cars, we want to make cars in Detroit."
In a post made on his Truth Social platform, Trump concluded that “America has helped many Countries throughout the years, at great financial cost. It is now time that these Countries remember this, and treat us fairly — A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD FOR AMERICAN WORKERS.”
Beyond the automotive industry, pharmaceuticals and semiconductor chips will also be affected by the April 2nd deadline.
