Tuesday Ticker: President Trump threatens 100 percent tariffs on Canadian-made vehicles

In a Fox News interview President Trump told reporters “...if you look at Canada, Canada has a very big car industry. They stole it from us. They stole it because our people were asleep at the wheel.”

Ottawa, Ontario – In this weekly Tuesday Ticker, United States President Donald Trump continues tariff threats against the Canadian automobile industry, this time threatening as much as 100 percent tariffs on the country's vehicles. 

Tariff tearaways 

Following a pause in tariff threats against Canada,  President Trump is now threatening to hit Canadian-made vehicles with 50 percent to 100 percent tariffs.

In an interview with Fox News, Trump told reporters that “...if you look at Canada, Canada has a very big car industry. They stole it from us. They stole it because our people were asleep at the wheel.”

According to Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, “Five global OEMs assemble more than 1.4 million vehicles at Canadian plants each year: Stellantis, Ford, GM, Honda and Toyota.”

Additionally regarding the recent 25 percent steel and aluminum tariffs that were put in place on February 11, 2025, Jim Farley, CEO of Ford in the U.S. further commented in an official statement that a 25 percent levy “across the Mexico and Canadian border will blow a hole in the U.S. industry that we have never seen. It would give free rein to South Korean and Japanese and European companies that wouldn’t be subjected to those Mexican and Canadian tariffs.”
