Global Refinish & Coatings: Tailwinds to drive up profits

Coatings

Driven by an aging global vehicle fleet, tightening environmental regulations, and rapid shop digitization, the global automotive refinish coatings market is on a steady upward trajectory, according to a new report published by Mordor Intelligence.

The sector was valued at $12.86 billion in 2025 and is estimated to reach $13.65 billion in 2026. It is projected to expand to $18.91 billion by 2031, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.73%.

The primary catalyst behind this resilience is the expanding global vehicle parc, which reached over 1.47 billion registered units in 2024.

Vehicle longevity has hit historic highs, with the average age of passenger cars in the United States climbing to 12.6 years.

In Europe, 38% of the passenger car fleet is now more than 10 years old, while China’s vehicle parc exceeds 340 million units.

This aging infrastructure shields the refinish sector from short-term fluctuations in new-car sales by generating consistent demand for surface restoration, corrosion treatment, and repainting.

Passenger cars represented the largest vehicle segment in 2025, capturing 68.07% of market revenue.

However, commercial vehicle refinishing is expected to grow at a faster 7.83% CAGR through 2031, driven by fleet operator demand for durable finishes and minimal downtime.

Demonstrating strong demand in the repair sector, Axalta reported $545 million in refinish net sales in Q2 2026 alone, up 6% year-over-year due to net new collision repair facility additions.

Layer-wise, basecoats commanded the largest revenue share in 2025 at 35.45% due to complex color-matching requirements for metallic and multi-stage paint systems.

Clearcoats represent the fastest-growing layer, projected to expand at a 7.34% CAGR through 2031.

Energy efficiency is driving clearcoat innovation, highlighted by PPG’s release of its Deltron D8178 Rapid Low Energy clearcoat in March 2026, which air dries at 20°C or reaches dust-dry status in five minutes at 50°C.

In the resin category, polyurethane generated 40.34% of 2025 revenue, but acrylic resins are expanding fastest at a 7.53% CAGR.

Innovation in acrylics remains strong, with Donglai Coating Technology filing a patent in June 2026 for a 2K high-temperature clearcoat boasting a distinctness-of-image value of 92.

Donglai also reported 2025 refinish revenue of CNY 312 million ($43 million), marking a 24.97% year-over-year increase.

Environmental compliance is forcing a major shift in coating technology across key markets.

Solvent-borne formulations accounted for 48.12% of 2025 revenue, but waterborne technology is leading growth with a 7.68% CAGR through 2031.

Regulatory actions are accelerating this conversion, including South Coast AQMD Rule 1151 in California and proposed VOC limit amendments in Canada.

In response, PPG introduced its Quickline waterborne refinish system in August 2026 for the U.S. and Canada, while breaking ground on a $280 million expansion of its Delaware, Ohio manufacturing site.

Beyond chemical performance, supplier competition is increasingly tied to digital workflow tools and multi-location repair network agreements.

In January 2026, PPG signed an exclusive refinish partnership with Quality Collision Group covering more than 95 repair centers across 13 states.

Digital software integrations are also gaining ground, such as Axalta’s February 2026 partnership with aspaara for simulation and operational planning software.

At Automechanika Frankfurt in September 2026, MIPA presented its Smart Mixing concept utilizing artificial intelligence, while Axalta unveiled "Redefined," a saturated ruby red, as its 2027 Global Automotive Color of the Year.

Industry consolidation remains active, led by a proposed $25 billion all-stock combination of Axalta and AkzoNobel, which received shareholder approval on August 5, 2026.

Additionally, Nippon Paint expanded its reach by reacquiring its European automotive coatings business from Wuthelam Group for €47 million ($53.97 million).

Geographically, Asia-Pacific dominates the global market, accounting for 42.93% of 2025 revenue and projected to lead global growth at a 7.71% CAGR through 2031.
