Model Y-es Please: Tesla Model Y earns Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS

Washington D.C. — Tesla’s 2021-2022 Model Y earned Top Safety Pick+ designation on Tuesday from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), according to a report from Reuters.

The EV developer made the right call in converting to a camera-only system, as the IIHS said the Model Y’s standard front crash-prevention system earned superior ratings in both the vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian tests.

Vehicles eligible for awards must satisfy a number of criteria, including scoring a “good” rating on six tests that include the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, original side, roof strength and head restraint tests.

They must also be available with a front crash-prevention system that earns high ratings for vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations. The vehicles must also score well for headlights.

Model Y vehicles built after April 2021 meet all the criteria for the “plus” rating.
