The Sky is Falling: P.E.I woman suffers close call with ice damaged windshield

Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island — It was a beautiful Thursday in P.E.I. Norma MacEachern was riding in the passenger seat of her friend’s car. They were heading towards Charlottetown along Brackley Point Rd. and suddenly a piece of ice fell from the roof of the van in front of them.

“Apparently the car ahead of us veered to avoid it,” she said. “We weren’t as fortunate.”

The piece of ice broke the windshield and came straight inside, injuring MacEachern.

“I remember a tremendously loud explosion. I’ll never forget that sound,” she said. The glass hit MacEachern “everywhere.”

“Face, very close to my eyes — luckily I was wearing large sunglasses.”

Falling ice from vehicles can be extremely dangerous for not only other motorists but any pedestrians that may be around as well.

MacEachern was lucky that her friend could safely pull over after the incident.

“We’re seeing a lot of vehicles with ice still on top of the roof of their car,” said Const. Jamie Parsons of the provincial traffic unit. “Ice comes off and coming toward you, not only the weight of that, but the speed of that ice is very dangerous.”

P.E.I. RCMP say that they keep informing citizens about the danger of snow and ice on top of vehicles every year. According to P.E.I. RCMP, drivers that have snow or ice obstructing their view can be charged $250.
