St. Clair, Michigan – Aurora, Ontario-based Magna International is taking its first steps south of the border as the company announced plans to build a 345,000 sq.-ft. facility in the city of St. Clair, Michigan to produce battery enclosures for the new 2022 GMC Hummer EV.

Operating under the newly established entity of Magna Electric Vehicle Structures-Michigan, Inc., the new Magna subsidiary was officially approved for funding by the Michigan Strategic Fund (MSF) at a meeting on Tuesday, to the tune of a $1.5 million grant.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said in a news release that the $70.1 million project will create 304 jobs and generate $70.1 million in private investment, and the MSF board said the new facility will have the ability to support an expansion of up to one million square feet.

”This investment by Magna will create great jobs for our state’s talented workforce as we continue to implement our Michigan Back to Work plan to get Michiganders back on their feet,” Whitmer said in the announcement.

“This reaffirms that Michigan is transforming along with the automotive industry to ensure the next generation of mobility and electrification is designed, developed, tested, and built right here in our state.”
