statscan

Toronto, Ontario – As the Canadian automotive industry makes it’s slow climb toward recovery, following sharp sales declines at the height of the pandemic, new data from Statistics Canada shows that electric vehicle (EV) and hybrid sales are leading the charge in overall sales volume.

According to data published by Stats Can on Feb 11., 18,771 zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) were sold in Canada between July and September, of which EVs represented 67.1 percent and hybrids making up 32.9 percent.

Fourth-quarter data for vehicle sales has yet to be made available by Stats Can, however, private market research firm IHS Markit recently reported that Canadian EV sales in that period were up nine percent versus 2019.

Stats Can’s data also shows an improvement in market share for ZEVs, which currently sits at 3.7 percent, up from 3.1 percent in the previous quarter and 3.5 percent in the previous year.

At a regional level, it was found that 92.9 percent of ZEV sales came from British Columbia, Quebec and Ontario, of which British Columbia had the largest market share at 8.4 percent.
