Premier Doug Ford cuts rebate program for electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles

Toronto, Ontario – July 13, 2018 — Ontario Premier Doug Ford has announced the cancellation of the province’s rebate program for electric and hydrogen-powered cars.

Since last June Canadian electric car sales have tripled; reflecting the growing consumer emphasis being placed on lowering vehicle emissions.

The reason behind the cancellation of the program stems from Ford’s campaign promise to reduce gas prices by ten cents per litre. The Premier’s plan revolves around abolishing the cap-and-trade program, an initiative that penalizes companies that over-pollute.

According to the Conservative government, Ontario families and businesses stand to save 1.9 billion annually by the removal of the rebate program.

Electric car sales will undoubtedly decline in Ontario as the Conservative government pushes for more cost effective and less eco-friendly automotive policies.

With Ontario exiting from the rebate program, Quebec and British Columbia remain as Canada’s only two provinces that will provide consumer incentives for buying electric and hydrogen fuelled vehicles.
