Vancouver, British Columbia -- Collision repair professionals considering opening new facilities out west may wish to check out the Insurance Company of British Columbia's list of the province's most dangerous intersections.

In the year ending June 30, 2024, there were 107,589 crashes at B.C. intersections, according the the province's public auto insurer. With an astounding 481 collisions, the on-off ramp for the Alex Fraser Bridge at Cliveden Avenue in Vancouver is the province's most dangerous intersection.

About 82,988 of these occured in the province's Lower Mainland region, considerably more than in the second-placed region, Vancouver Island, which saw 11,612 incidents.

A similar list released by the Canadian Automobile Association highlights the roads in Ontario drawing the most concern from drivers and commuters. To no one's surprise, the vast majority of the worst-ranked roads were in the greater Golden Horseshoe Region around Toronto.

Aberdeen Avenue in Hamilton was ranked Ontario’s worst road due to poor surface conditions, persistent maintenance issues and heavy traffic congestion.  Barton Street East — also in Hamilton —  slipped into second place this year after topping the list in 2022 and 2023. County Road 49 in Prince Edward County rounded out the top three, followed by the construction-plagued  Eglinton Avenue West in Toronto.

Other roads featured on the 2024 list include Hurontario Street in Mississauga, Leveque Road in South Frontenac and Toronto’s Gardiner Expressway, which placed ninth. Issues ranged from potholes and surface degradation to inadequate drainage and road design concerns.

The CAA’s annual Worst Roads campaign gathers feedback from thousands of Ontarians, offering a snapshot of public sentiment and pressing infrastructure problems. For auto repair professionals and road safety advocates alike, these lists serve as a useful gauge of where caution — and an industry presence —  is  most needed.
