Dordrecht, The Netherlands — A series of auto auctions currently taking place in The Netherlands is proving historic, both in terms of scale and substance, as the more than 200-strong fleet of rare and classic cars owned by Dutch businessman Ad Palmen find new homes.

With rides like the rare Lancia B24 Spider America currently on the auction block, automotive experts are calling this a unique opportunity for classic car collectors to get their hands on some truly hidden gems.

The word “hidden” is no mistake either, as many of the 230 vehicles were discovered in warehouses, as well as an abandoned church, about 40 years ago when Palmen started his collection.

The auction, which has been ongoing since May 19, is being put on by Nico and Nick Aaldering of Gallery Aaldering and Classic Car Auctions.

According to the auction house’s press release, Palmen’s ailing health led to his decision to part ways with the long-standing collection.

“This barnfind collection is truly a unique opportunity for car enthusiasts and collectors around the world to expand their collection,” read the release.

“We are very pleased to be able to auction these cars through Classic Car Auctions and look forward to seeing how much interest there is in this wonderful collection.”

The head of marketing at Gallery Aaderling, Carlo Te Lintelo, told CNN that Palmen’s collection was actually intended to remain private until a fire at one of his warehouses last year, and the subsequent recovery of the vehicles by the fire department, let the secret slip.

Te Lintelo says that prospective buyers can expect a diverse array of cars on auction, a fact that he says exemplifies Palmen’s passion for automotive history in general.

“These cars are in great condition and immensely diverse. What you often see is people focusing on one brand when they are collecting cars like Mercedes Benz, Jaguar or BMW,” he said.

“Mr Palmen didn’t collect just expensive or exclusive cars, he bought everything he thought was beautiful,” Te Lintelo said.
