Alliston, Ontario — Honda Canada’s Alliston, Ont. plant is due for some shiny new toys as the provincial government announced a $131.6 million grant earmarked for upgrading and retooling Canada’s sole Honda assembly facility.

This grant from the Ontario government brings Honda’s total investment in upgrading the Alliston facility to nearly $1.4 billion, according to the province’s press release.

With this recent cash influx, Honda is able to upgrade pre-existing production lines to manufacture hybrid vehicles. The Alliston facility currently produces CR-V and Civic models.

“Ontario is proud to support Honda Canada’s major investment to retool its Alliston plant to manufacture the company’s next-generation models, including hybrid versions. Through Phase 2 of our Driving Prosperity plan we are focusing on transitioning Ontario’s automotive supply chain,” said Minister of economic development, job creation and trade, Vic Fedeli.

“By reducing the cost of doing business in Ontario by nearly $7 billion annually, our government has created the right economic conditions to attract yet another historic investment that further positions Ontario as a North American leader in developing and building the cars of the future.”

Honda is aiming for 100 percent zero-emission vehicle sales by 2040.
