Full Stop: Tesla issues recall over ‘rolling stops’ in self-driving mode

stop

Toronto, Ontario — Tesla AI appears to be picking up some bad human habits as the automaker announced that they will be recalling 53,822 vehicles on the road in the U.S. for their tendency to make “rolling stops” at stop signs when “Full Self-Driving” is enabled.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall covers some 2016 to 2022 Model S and Model X; 2017 to 2022 Model 3; and 2020 to 2022 Model Y vehicles.

No crashes, injuries, or fatalities have yet been attributed to the fault, but Tesla says an over-the-air update is on the way to disable the rolling stop function.

The rolling stop function is a deliberate and obviously controversial aspect of Tesla’s FSD technology, as it permits a vehicle to roll through a stop sign if the vehicle is travelling below 9 km/h and no relevant moving cars, pedestrians, or bicyclists are detected near the intersection.
