Windsor, Ontario — Stellantis’ Windsor Assembly Plant’s current shutdown will be extended another week due to the global shortage of microchips.

The Stellantis–formerly known as Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, or FCA–Windsor plant has been shut down since March 29. It was originally supposed to last four weeks, however, it will be closed for at least a total of seven weeks.

Currently, workers are expected to return by May 17.

Unifor, the union that governs autoworkers in Canada, alongside its leaders are asking the federal government to begin supplying microchips domestically.

“It’s terrible. This has to be fixed. We need to start manufacturing products here in Canada,” Unifor Local 444 president Dave Cassidy told CBC. “It’s not just the chips. Tomorrow, it could be the batteries for the electric vehicle.”
