Back to Work: Ingersoll plant resumes production during GM strike

Toronto, Ontario — Oct. 8, 2019 — General Motors’ Ingersoll, Ont. plant has resumed its production as the UAW strike against the company enters its fourth week with no signs of stopping.

Although the plant remained opened past analyst prediction dates, it was finally shut down last week, following a schedule released by the UAW. With the reopening of the plant today, it is now expected to be able to run to the end of October at the least.

2,400 hourly workers have brought the Ingersoll plant back to life–and with their efforts–the St. Catharines plant can continue to operate at a third of its capacity as it supplies Ingersoll with the engines for the Chevrolet Equinox it produces there.

The strike continues with workers demanding a larger share of the more than US$30 billion GM has earned in the past five years. The contention arose when it was learned that GM is trying to cut labour costs to compete with foreign automakers operating in the US.

Today marks the 23rd day of the UAW’s strike–now lasting more than 11 times longer than the unions only other strike against the GM in 2007.
