NSF will no longer certify automotive parts

Toronto, Ontario — June 25, 2019 – NSF announced late last week that they will no longer certify automotive parts, effective Oct. 1.

The announcement came in on Thursday in the form of a press release. NSF, a Michigan-based international certification company, is closing their Automotive Parts Certification program.

“NSF International continually evaluates its programs and services and we considered many factors when making this decision,” said Lori Bestervelt, Executive Vice President and Chief Technical Officer of NSF International.

According to NSF, “a product certified by NSF lets you know the company complies with strict standards and procedures imposed by NSF. From extensive product testing and material analyses to unannounced plant inspections, every aspect of a product’s development is thoroughly evaluated before it can earn our certification.”

NSF does not only certify car parts. The company looks after many different divisions of consumerist safety such as agricultural practices, food safety, water treatment, as well as greenhouse gas verification, manufacturing processes and much more.

“Ultimately, we are choosing to focus on programs and services that are more directly aligned with our long-term, strategic vision for the organization,” Bestervelt announced.

Not only is NSF no longer providing certification, but auto shops, and OEMs are also no longer to advertise that their automotive parts are certified by them after the first of Oct.

However, auto recyclers are still protected by NSF.

“The NSF full-service automotive recycler certification program provides independent, third-party certification for automotive recyclers and confirms recyclers’ ability to meet requirements such as grading, labeling and traceability as well as federal, state and local recycler requirements.” stated their site.
