Toronto, Ontario – June 6, 2019 – According to Manitoba Public Insurance, the public insurer has seen a 63 percent increase in calls reporting auto insurance fraud.

While the spike in fraudulent claims being made by customers may sound alarming, in actual numbers, it equals an increase of about 30 investigations. According to the public insurer, a total of 290 calls were handled, resulting in 52 investigations being opened by MPI’s Special Investigation Unit

With this increase MPI had brought a public awareness campaign to life.

“Earlier this year the Corporation launched it’s first-ever, fraud-themed public awareness campaign which successfully resulted in raising awareness among Manitobans,” said MPI vice president, customer service and COO Curtis Wennberg.

Fraud: We All Pay focuses on how auto insurance fraud in Manitoba affects the rate drivers pay. It also stresses that auto insurance affects Manitoba drivers about $50 a year.

A recent MPI survey of 800 respondents uncovered that auto insurance isn’t something they are aware of. More than half indicated that they were more likely to report a fraud after seeing the campaign ads.

Anyone with information about auto insurance fraud is encouraged to call the MPI’s TIPS Line: 204-985-8477 or toll-free 1-877-985-8477. All calls are anonymous.
