Marketplace Makeover: AutoTrader announces AI-powered overhaul

AutoTrader has announced a major overhaul of its online automotive marketplace, introducing a redesigned platform built around artificial intelligence and new dealer tools intended to better match Canadian vehicle shoppers with dealer inventory.

The next-generation marketplace,  expected to launch nationally this spring, represents the company’s largest platform transformation and investment to date. The update combines an AI-powered discovery system, a redesigned consumer shopping experience and a new dealer dashboard intended to provide deeper insight into inventory performance.

Following more than a year of testing and refinement with dealer partners and Canadian car shoppers, early results show stronger alignment between shopper intent and dealer inventory, as well as higher-quality inquiries and improved engagement rates ahead of the national rollout.

“Discovery today looks very different than it did even a few years ago, and Canadians expect the experience to be as intuitive and flexible as the technology they use every day,” explained Jody Gill. “The new AutoTrader marketplace reflects that shift by meeting consumers where they are and leveraging AI to power more relevant connections between buyers and sellers.”

At the centre of the update is DemandAI, an intelligence layer designed to improve listing discovery and relevance. The system evaluates more than 50 vehicle attributes alongside more than 30 shopper intent signals to determine how listings are ranked and surfaced to potential buyers.

The platform also introduces a new centralized dealer dashboard intended to allow partners to monitor inventory performance and make data-driven decisions tied to conversion and revenue outcomes.

“This represents a major step forward for our brand and platform,” explained Justin Re. Re noted the project was developed through more than a year of consultation and testing and supported by more than 300 engineers, product leaders and designers.

The company has also simplified its dealer offering into three packages -- Go, Smart and Pro -- designed to allow dealerships to scale marketplace visibility and performance according to their business needs while reducing platform complexity.

AutoTrader indicated it will continue investing in marketplace enhancements as vehicle shopping behaviour evolves, building on more than 50 years as an automotive marketplace in Canada.
