Feeling the Heat: Over 50 Rivian R1S and R1T models damaged in factory parking lot fire

Normal, Illinois — A fire reportedly broke out in the parking lot of Rivian’s Normal, Illinois, assembly plant last weekend, damaging over 50 R1S and R1T models waiting to be shipped to customers.

According to accounts, the Normal Fire Department (NFD) received the call about the fire on Saturday night around 9:45 p.m. While the cause of the fire is currently unknown, NFD spokesperson, Matt Swaney originally told 25NewsNow that an investigation has been started to get to the source of the issue.

As of midnight on Sunday, the fire was entirely extinguished and crews remained on scene to monitor the site. Swaney further reported to news outlets that the plant—which assembles all of Rivian’s current models and is set to produce the upcoming R2 SUV—was not affected by the fire.

Additionally, according to InsideEV, an aerial photo of the site posted to Facebook after the fire shows 57 vehicles corralled in a corner of the factory parking lot, all in various states of damage.

Only the R1S and R1T vehicles seem to have been affected by the incident, and currently, no injuries have been reported.

This is a developing story.
