Faulty Fuel Pump: Toyota is conducting a safety recall involving certain 86 Models

Toronto, Ontario — Toyota Canada is conducting a safety recall involving fuel pumps on certain 2018 and 2019 Toyota 86 models. In Canada, approximately 232 vehicles are involved in this recall.

According to Subaru, the affected vehicles may be equipped with a low-pressure fuel pump produced during a specific timeframe that may include an impeller which has been manufactured with a lower density. In these vehicles, the functionality of the fuel pump controller (FPC) combined with a lower density impeller may lower the resistance to interference between the impeller and the body of the fuel pump, potentially causing the low-pressure fuel pump to become inoperative.

If the low-pressure fuel pump becomes inoperative, the check engine warning light or malfunction indicator light may illuminate, and/or the engine may run rough. In the worst case, an inoperative fuel pump may result in the engine stalling without the ability to restart the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

For all involved vehicles, Toyota dealers will replace the involved fuel pump with an improved one at no cost to customers.

Owners of vehicles included in the recall will be notified by September 27, 2021.
