The Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) and the B.C. Highway Patrol are teaming up on the Victoria Day long weekend to educate drivers about the dangers of speeding.

Footage recently posted to YouTube depicts police monitoring a busy corridor for speeding, chasing and flagging drivers in violation of the limit and using laser radar. Representatives of the companies were interviewed in the video, including Kathleen Nadalin, ICBC road safety manager and Cpl. Michael McLaughlin, B.C. Highway Patrol.

According to the ICBC newsroom, police issued more than 2,800 speeding tickets across B.C. last Victoria Day long weekend. The tickets issued from May 16 to 19, 2025, represented a variety of speeding infractions, including disobeying construction signs, excessive speeding and increasing speed while being passed.

Drivers decide to speed for a multitude of reasons, believes Nadalin, including being in a rush, running late or enjoying going fast in cars. “Speed limits are there for a reason,” she said. “If you go the speed limit, you’re ensuring that everyone around you can get to their destination safely.”

On average, three people are killed and 536 people are injured in crashes in B.C. every year. Speed is a leading contributing factor in crashes over the Victoria Day long weekend. McLaughlin wants to bring down those fatalities. “If you’re going faster, the chance of you or a loved one dying or being seriously hurt goes way up,” he said, encouraging drivers to be more compassionate by slowing down. “Excessive speed isn’t going to get you there faster—it could lead to tragedy.”
