BMW’s Over-the-air repairs

By CRM staff

Toronto, Ontario — June 4, 2019 — BMW owners may now receive remote software upgrades to their vehicles. These upgrades include improvements to the functionality of ADAS, though do not currently allow for external calibrations to be performed.

Not the first OEM to begin offering over-the-air systems updates to customers, Tesla announced it had updated ADAS features on 60,000 vehicles last year. Over the past six months, several other OEMs have followed.

While over-the-air technologies will never be able to perform physical repairs, the ability for OEMs to send and receive information promises to play a major role in the relationship between OEMs and auto repair facilities. In the United States, Ford will soon provide direct referrals to drivers whenever a vehicle’s onboard computer sends wireless error messages to the OEM.
